Description

Walt's Field Day Cover Concept Sketch. (Walt Disney, 1938). After completing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, there was no Hollywood style "wrap party" to show of appreciation from Walt to his artists. To make up for this omission, a special "field day" event was held at a resort by Lake Norconian. The day-long event culminated in an alcohol-fueled dinner that became legendary for its many, let's say, excesses; needless to say, Walt never sanctioned another event like this! A special program was printed up for the event, with a drawing of Mickey Mouse on the cover based on Fred Moore's new design for the character. (Yes, that Fred Moore. The famous "Freddie's Girls" animator!) This is the first known instance of a published Mickey Mouse image with eyes containing pupils, rather than the usual shoe-button ovals with "pie cut" highlights! Acquired in the legendary June 2023 Heritage Signature® Auction (#7310) Celebrating 100 Years Of Disney: 1923 - 2023, this attributed relic predating the 1938 studio event is an original studio concept drawing of Mickey in all his glory for the published event program. Rendered in graphite on paper with an approximate image size of 5.5" x 5.5". The unsigned drawing is sealed in a black cloth mat with an opening of 8.75" x 11", and an overall mat size of 13.75" x 16". It's in Very Good to Fine condition with light handling.
